It’s July, and that means Fibroid Awareness Month. Let’s have a conversation on holistic approaches to fibroid wellness. As a Black Holistic Wellness Guide with my fibroid story, I aim to empower you to take charge of your health. Let’s talk about fibroids and holistic approaches to managing them.


What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb (uterus). They can vary in size, number, and location, causing many symptoms or, in some cases, no symptoms. Although they are quite common, affecting up to 80% of women by age 50, research shows that fibroids are three times more likely to occur in Black women 1. They also tend to develop at a younger age and grow more quickly.


The symptoms can be severe, causing heavy and prolonged periods, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and in some cases, fertility issues. Notably, these symptoms can heavily impact a woman’s quality of life.


Holistic Approach to Fibroids

The conventional approach to treating fibroids often includes medications and surgeries. Women are usually only given the option of a hysterectomy (this was my story), and no other options are given. However, as we navigate our path toward wellness, we understand that proper health is not just the absence of disease but a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being.


So how can we manage fibroids in an empowering, natural, and holistic way 2?


Diet and Lifestyle

Begin by nurturing your body with a nutrient-dense diet. Research suggests that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy can reduce the risk of fibroids. Conversely, a red meat and ham diet might increase the risk. Staying active and maintaining a healthy weight can also play a part in managing fibroids.


Stress Management

 Chronic stress can wreak havoc on our hormonal balance. Stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, journaling, and deep breathing exercises can help maintain a hormonal equilibrium and aid in managing fibroids.


Hormone Balance

Balancing hormones is a crucial part of managing fibroids naturally. Avoiding endocrine disruptors found in plastics, certain beauty products, and some types of food packaging can help. Regular check-ins with a healthcare provider who understands and respects your desire for a holistic approach can be extremely beneficial.


Herbal Support

Certain herbs, such as Vitex (Chaste Tree Berry), Milk Thistle, and Dandelion Root, have been known to support hormonal balance and liver health, which can benefit women with fibroids. Always consult with a professional before starting a new supplement regimen.


Community Support

Lastly, remember that you are not alone on this journey. Reach out to the women around you. Our collective experiences, wisdom, and support can offer invaluable comfort and understanding. I’d love to have you join my community


As Black and Brown women, our health matters. We are the life-givers, the nurturers, the queens. Embracing a natural and holistic approach allows us to reclaim our health and stand in our power.
